Smiling in the rain - snapshots of GNR 2024

I’ve been an amateur distance runner for a few years now - this habit started sometime during uni and I’ve passed various stages and phases of involvement with it, but I’ve always appreciated how running - as painful as it gets at times - enhances just about every aspect of my life. Although I prefer not running in a group, I couldn’t not sign up to run the Great North Run last year, and that’s also when I told myself that I’d return to capture the essence of it. That day was yesterday and what a day it was.

My self-inflicted brief wasn’t about the usual full-body running photos that populate social media grids, instead I got as close as possible to capture emotions & details across the route.

From nervous warmups at the never-ending start line & strong starts on the streets of Newcastle until the very last meters of the route in South Shields I zoomed in as much as possible to highlight a gradient and contrast of feelings.

Nevertheless, what I think makes the Great North Run special is the uninterrupted support across the entire stretch of the route. I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to emphasise how the runners benefit from unconditional support which to me is what makes the the Great North Run great.
